Art Intent and Values

Ephesians 2:10, ESV: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

At Holy Trinity Rosehill CofE (A) Primary School we follow a skills based approach to teaching art that supports other topics and themes in the curriculum at the same time as equipping our children with a set of art skills that they are able to consolidate and build upon as they move through our school. Key elements of learning are to:

  • Produce creative work, exploring ideas and recording own experiences
  • Explore different techniques – drawing, painting, sculpture and other techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers

What makes art extra special is that it is one of the highest forms of creativity and is fully inclusive! – it is a true form of expression.

At Holy Trinity Rosehill CofE (A) Primary School we recognise that art and creativity are allies of high standards not enemies or diversions and play a key role in child development, providing opportunities for self-expression in ways that words cannot, building confidence and self-discovery, developing critical thinking and the ability to interpret the world around us and supporting mental health and wellbeing. Giving learners the time, space, and materials for creative expression can lower stress, improve memory, and make them feel more socially connected.

We want our children to talk about exciting, rich, memorable and varied experiences in art and design. We want it to be a subject fully embedded within our curriculum – a subject that has enriched their understanding of topics, ideas and concepts. We want children to be inspired by artists of the past, be aware and have pride in the work of local artists and feely equipped, motivated and empowered to become artists of the future.

How do we let our light shine in Art?

When you see and study another’s art, you’re seeing the world through their eyes. When you create, you’re letting the world see through yours.  Art develops self-expression and creativity. It provides opportunities to explore, evaluate, form opinions, experiment, take risks and master skills.  There are no right or wrong answers. Everyone can be an artist.

How do we live out our School Values through Art?

As we work together on different tasks and projects in a variety of groups, dimensions and scales, new friendships and relationships form and grow.

We put ourselves into the shoes of others and are mindful of their feelings as we express our opinions and evaluate each other’s’ work and the work of great artists and craftspeople.

We show compassion to others when they are finding techniques difficult to master.

Our sketchbooks are a record of our learning journey and serve to show us that it is not the finished product that is most important but the lessons we learnt on the way. Sometimes we find techniques easy and sometimes we struggle but reviewing, developing, improving and showing endurance it is all part of the learning process that makes us better artists and stronger people in the end.

We thank God for the many and varied opportunities that he has given us to paint, draw, sculpt, print, stick, cut, carve, dye, mould and sew.
We ask God for the patience and courage to forgive ourselves and others when our ideas and plans do not work out as we had hoped so that we can move on to new projects with serenity and ambition.

We look at lots of different artists in art, it’s fun to learn more about them.
