Year 5 Educational Visit – Wednesday 15th October
Dear Parents/Carers,
On Wednesday 15th October 2014 children in Year 5 will be attending an educational visit to the Life Science Centre in Newcastle. The purpose of the visit is to explore two areas of the Year 5 curriculum: The Earth and Beyond (Space) and Healthy Living.
The day will begin with a visit to the centre’s planetarium to learn about astronomy within our solar system. We will then watch the new planetarium show Back to the Moon for Good to learn about the Moon Landings and future missions into space. This will launch of our new Year 5 Space Project. The children will then take part in an ‘Astronaut Training’ workshop with members of staff from the centre.
The Life Science Centre is currently hosting Gunther von Hagen’s Body Worlds Vital exhibition. This is a world-renowned exhibition and we are very fortunate to have it visit the North East of England as other Body Worlds exhibitions are currently situated in central Europe, Boston and New York. The exhibitions are unique in the sense that they use real human bodies to demonstrate the effects of an unhealthy lifestyle and the benefits of staying healthy. The exhibits have replaced muscle tissue with plastic and are odourless with no “gore” element present. We recommend that you watch the video below to learn more about the exhibition:
The Life Science Centre recommends that the exhibition is suitable for children ages eight and above. As all children in Year 5 are above the age of eight, it is our intention to allow them visit the Body Worlds Vital Exhibition.
Further information about the exhibition, including frequently asked questions, can be viewed here (external link to Life Science Centre website).
We believe that a visit to the BODY WORLDS Vital exhibition will inspire children with a sense of wonder and awe about the marvels of the human body in a way that is accessible and unique.
Yours sincerely,
