At Holy Trinity Rosehill we aim to equip children with the tools to understand Maths. Maths is important in everyday life. It is a universal language and integral to all aspects of life. With this in mind we strive to endeavour that children develop a healthy and enthusiastic attitude towards maths.
The National Curriculum for maths aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of maths, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
  • Can solve problems by applying their maths to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Maths is taught through a daily lesson using the Maths Mastery approach which focuses on using the concrete>pictorial>abstract. The approach is designed to enhance understanding and enjoyment, as well as raise attainment for every child. Through using concrete apparatus, pictorial and abstract representations all children can achieve.

How do we let our light shine in Maths?

Maths seeks to recognise the individual importance of all children and the entitlement of all to learn and benefit from the Maths curriculum in an environment where there is trust, fairness and respect.

We let our light shine in maths by continually working hard and using the maths mastery approach to help us with our maths lessons on a daily basis. We work collaboratively and have the freedom to explore, to make mistakes and to grow through problem solving activities.

How do we live out our School Values through Maths?

We celebrate our friendships in maths through working together to solve problems. We also celebrate our friends when they have successes in maths.

We show compassion by being kind to ourselves and each other when we are finding maths tricky.

We show endurance by developing the skills we need to keep working hard, even when maths is difficult. We never give up.
We are thankful for all of the opportunities maths gives us. We also show thankfulness for the wonderful resources that we have to help us with our maths.
We forgive ourselves when we make mistakes. We know that it is okay to make mistakes and we learn from them.
