At Holy Trinity Rosehill CofE Primary School, our vision is to instil a sense of enjoyment around using technology and to develop children’s appreciation of all its capabilities and the opportunities technology offers to: create, manage, organise and collaborate. We want to develop our pupils’ confidence when encountering new technology, which is a vital skill in the ever evolving and changing landscape of technology. Through our curriculum, we intend for pupils to become digitally competent and have a range of transferable skills as a suitable level for the future workplace, as well as being responsible online citizens as we develop their understanding of online behaviour, copyright issues, being discerning consumers of online information and healthy use of technology.
The delivery of Computing follows the requirements of the National Curriculum – we have adopted the DfE approved scheme ‘Teach Computing’. This scheme is ambitious, written by experts and ensures 100% curriculum coverage and follows the following strands of the computing curriculum:
- Understanding computer systems and networks
- Digital media creativity
- Understand and apply computer science through;
- collecting, representing and interpreting data
- programming; including abstraction, logic and algorithms
- Use information and communication technology in a competent, responsible and safe manner and an awareness of risks
By the end of their primary education, our children will leave Holy Trinity Rosehill with a range of skills to enable them to succeed in their secondary school education and be active participants in our ever-increasing digital world. Our expected impact of our Computing curriculum is that children will:
- Be confident users of technology, able to use it to accomplish a wide variety of goals, both at home and in school
- Be critical thinkers and able to understand how to make informed and appropriate digital choices for the future
- Understand the importance that computing will have going forward in their educational, social and future working life
- Understand how to balance time spent on technology and time spent away from it in a healthy and appropriate manner
- Be aware of online safety issues and protocols and be able to deal with any problems in a responsible and appropriate manner
- Have a secure and comprehensive knowledge of the implications of technology and digital systems. This is important in a society where technologies and trends are rapidly evolving
- Understand how technology helps to showcase their ideas and creativity
- Show a clear progression of technical skills across all areas of the National Curriculum
Be able to apply the British values of democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, rule of law and liberty when using digital systems
How do we let our light shine in Computing?
At Holy Trinity Rosehill, we encourage children to ‘Let their light shine’ by providing all our children with the knowledge, skills and creativity to live and thrive in a world increasingly dependent on computing. The use of Computing enhances and extends our children’s learning across the whole curriculum whilst contributing to motivation and the development of social skills. Pupils will ‘let their lights shine’ by becoming – enthusiastic, curious, independent thinkers; motivated, reflective and resilient learners; tolerant and responsible citizens.
How do we live out our School Values through Computing?
I love using the Bee-Bots and Blue-Bots in our computing sessions.
I really enjoyed our stop/start animation topic – it was so much fun!
I like using IPads to research information in other subjects, like Geography and Science.
We had fun this year learning about different kinds of codes and how coding was important during WWII times.
