In our school, we encourage our learner to develop the ability to speak a foreign language, as it is a necessary part of being a member of a multi-cultural society and provides an opening to other cultures. By developing our learner’s confidence in understanding and speaking French, they will develop a positive attitude to language learning and an interest in other cultures. We strive to stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity through discussion and asking questions about the language, as well as continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation. At Holy Trinity Rosehill we make French fun and enjoyable through songs, games, role-play, language days, us of puppets and even learning our school prayer in French. We use resources that provides the correct French pronunciation and our scheme of work is well-sequenced to allow all children to make progress building on previous knowledge and skills.

Our main objective in the teaching of a modern foreign language is to promote the early development of linguistic competence.  We believe that to accomplish this, we should help the children to do all of the following:

  • To foster an interest in learning other languages and to develop a positive attitude towards the learning of foreign languages in general;
  • To introduce young children to another language in a way that is enjoyable and fun;
  • To familiarise themselves with the sounds and written form of a modern foreign language;
  • To develop particular language-learning skills;
  • To help children develop their awareness of cultural differences and similarities in other countries.
  • To use their knowledge of another language with growing confidence, to understand what they hear and read and to express themselves in speech and writing.
  • To lay a foundation for future study through all of the above.

    How do we let our light shine in French?

    When learning a new language, we are able to let our lights shine by opening up opportunities to communicate with others. Language helps us experience our world and by working hard, we can lay the foundations in primary school to be prepared and confident linguists when we are older.

    How do we live out our School Values through French?

    We develop friendships when we participate in French conversations and when we sing, perform and dance together.

    We show compassion towards each other when we help each other to pronounce the French words correctly. Also, we have compassion for the French culture.

    We develop our endurance when we persevere when learning new vocabulary and try again when we do not get the pronunciation correct the first time.
    We are thankful for other cultures and the French language and that we have the privilege to learn about a different culture.
    When someone makes mistakes, we show forgiveness. We forgive ourselves when we get things wrong and we never give up and always try again.

    Learning about other cultures is exciting and interesting.
